Mechanistic Roving

In Constructs of Diversion, Part II: Mechanistic Roving, I used the blending of digital image capture and modified plastic cameras to render off-world landscapes once imagined by a boy on a journey to his grandparent’s home. It is meant to elicit the question, what would it look like if we had remained transfixed by the notion that space travel and planet colonization were worthy goals post-Cold War? It considers the fragile environmental balance and the use of its natural resources. It contemplates the risk of exposure to incalculable biological vulnerabilities and the numerous social stressors placed upon a group of extraordinary humans in extraordinary circumstances. The project explores an approach to the making and meaning of art through an understanding of Adlerian Psychology, specifically, the concepts of Individualpsychologie (individual psychology), and Gemeinschaftsgefühl (feeling of community) and is meant to generate new cross-disciplinary thinking about our role as a global community within the infinite realm of space. On a more macro level, it is also a catalyst for memory, a physical manifestation of an adventurous and creative child’s yearning to escape into a new place, untainted and unexplored.
